RainForest
This airbrush art work by Nathan West of Grand Strand Mall was unveiled
during Vacation Bible School in Garden City
Rainforest at SOS
Vacation Bible School
Shepherd of the Sea Vacation Bible School students experienced Bible
stories under a
Rainforest Adventure canopy recently in late July. Bridget Wilburn, school
director, said
music, art, science, games, worship and drama had these kids soaring.
“As God’s people, we learned to share, give, grow, love and praise,” she
said.
“The kids aged 3 to 15 had a great time learning about the Rainforest and
growing to give
back to people in need.”
Wilburn said each child brought cans of food and hygiene items for Helping
Hand of
SurfsideBeach and Street Reach of Myrtle Beach. The schooling for more
than 35 stud-
ents took place in Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, Garden City.
Bible stories included:
Day 1, “We Share,” with Boaz sharing with Ruth, Ruth 2:1-7;
Day 2, “We Give,” Elisha Gives Food to 100 People, 2 Kings 4:42-44;
Day 3, “We Grow,” with the Parable of the Mustard Seed, Mark 4:30-32;
Day 4, “We Live, Jesus the Vine,” John 15: 1-5, 7-17, and
Day 5, “We Praise,” Jesus Enters Jerusalem, Mark 11:1-10---

Celebrating God, Country June 29, 2008

Imagine a red, white and blue prize-winning hat decorated with 11 American
flag designs---one magnolia blossom, two airplanes, three strands of beads
and foil
stars, four pinwheels that spin as you walk and a pleated paper gismo.
It was all part of a patriotic weekend in Garden City leading up to
Independence Day, and was billed as a celebration of “God and Country.”
Four hands on two piano played “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The first-place hat was worn by Jeanne Morrisette, who is a certified
public accountant from Surfside Beach. Morrisette said the hat was
borrowed from a co-worker, Janet McGrew, who wore it to work. “I asked to
borrow it for our patriotic Sunday at my church,” Morrisette said. “This
hat was made by Jane Housner, a fantastic art teacher at Forestbrook
Elementary School. I thought it was fabulous.”
Shepherd of the Sea (SOS) Lutheran Church choir sang “Pray for America,”
honoring God and Country in Garden City. Under the direction of Kim Holt,
the choir also sang “Mansions of the Lord, “In God We Trust” and “Battle
Hymn of the Republic.” The program cover quoted Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is
the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his
inheritance.”
God and Country are important to Morrisette who said she likes living on
the Grand Strand because she feels there are no strangers here. “Most of
us have at least one thing in common---we are ‘transplants’ by choice, and
have chosen to move here from somewhere else. My husband Mercer and I were
lucky to move here before we retired. I’ve met many interesting people and
developed some lasting friendships over the 23 years we’ve lived here.”
She said she is inspired by the retired people she’s met. “They have so
much energy and zest for life,” Morrisette said. “They stay active with
volunteer work or part-time jobs, and I believe it keeps them young. I
hope to be just like them when I finally retire.”
