USDA NONDISCRIMINATION STATEMENT

All information materials used to inform the public about FNS programs must contain a nondiscrimination statement. This includes but is not limited to brochures, pamphlets, flyers, social media, websites, television and newspaper announcements, etc.

In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race,

To file a program discrimination complaint, a complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, which can be obtained online, at https://www.
ascr.usda.gov/sites/default/files/USDA-OASCR%20P-Complaint- Form-0508-0002-508-11-28-17Fax2Mail.pdf, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter
addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to
inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation.

The Carol Hummel Food Pantry

Shepherd of the Sea for the most part has always had a food pantry.  For years, anyone could come into the church office and receive a bag of food to help food insecure families get through the week.

In 2018, Blee Picciano and Danielle Johnson, members of Shepherd of the Sea had a bigger vision for this outreach program.  Blee Picciano, had run a large food pantry in Florida and wanted to bring that vision to Shepherd of the Sea. Larger quantities of food were starting to be distributed, but that didn’t seem to be enough.

In 2019, Shepherd of the Sea became partners with Lowcountry Food Bank.  This enabled the food pantry to receive, meat, dairy, fruits, etc… This also allowed individuals to receive food that they could not get before.  Immediately the food pantry went from serving 25 individuals a week to serving over 100 individuals a week.

In the beginning of 2020 our food pantry went through another big change.  It was now a USDA food Pantry.  This meant that we were now receiving food from the Federal Government to give to our families in need.  With all the food that we started receiving, we were outgrowing our small food pantry.  

During 2020 we expanded our food pantry to double the size that it was to be able to receive and store the large amount of deliveries we receive every week.

In 2021, the food pantry was dedicated to Carol Hummel and became The Carol Hummel Food Pantry.  Carol and Bill Hummel’s vision was very similar to Shepherd of the Sea’s which is “NO ONE GOES HUNGRY”.   Also in 2021, this Food Pantry will become a WELLNESS PANRY.  This means it will start receive healthier options of food such as, low sodium, heart healthy, diabetic friendly.  In June of 2021 we also started distributing “Senior Boxes”. These are 25 lb. prepackaged boxes for anyone over the age of 60 years old.  These items are shelf stable food items to help seniors through the month.

Food Pantry hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 am – 11:30am

                                    Tuesday and Thursday  5:30 – 7:00 pm

Carol Hummel Food Pantry Vision and Mission Statement

Vision Statement:

“No one goes hungry; feed them and they will come”. To serve in a community where everyone has access to quality food, as well as an understanding of good health practices, both nutritional and physical.

Mission Statement:

The Carol Hummel Food Pantry is working to eliminate hunger in Horry and surrounding counties by providing resources to improve overall physical, mental and spiritual health. The Carol Hummel Food Pantry helps to ensure that food relief has a more meaningful impact.

Basic Premises:

  1. We are here to feed ALL God’s hungry children.
  2. Every person who comes to the door is not a “client” but a guest! We
    will address them as a guest and treat them with kindness, dignity
    and respect.
  3. We will not judge our guests by the condition of their clothes, the
    jewelry they may be wearing or the type of car they may be driving.
  4. We will not doubt their needs or question the intentions of our guests.

Food Pantry Volunteer Procedures

Community Lunch

All people from around the South Strand are invited to come and enjoy a free meal at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church. Churches from the area are working together to serve a great lunch for the community. 

  • If you are hungry, you are invited! 
  • If you are struggling to make ends meet, you are invited! 
  • If you are tired of eating alone at home or at work, you are invited! 
  • If you would just like to meet some new people while enjoying a delicious meal, you are invited! 

This is our gift to the community. We hope Community Lunch will become a gathering place for all people in the South Strand. Around the table, we will share a meal while also having the opportunity to get to know our neighbors. 

Our vision is for no one in our community to go hungry or to feel isolated during lunch on Wednesdays.

When: Every Wednesday, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM 

Where: Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall (across from Wal-Mart) 

Who: Everyone is invited. 

Why: Jesus said, “ For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’” (Matthew 25:35-36)

Blessing Box

Our Blessing Box was built as an Eagle Scout project by a group from St. Philips. It was completed in 2019 in order to provide simple food and beverages for the homeless in our community. This important ministry is fully  dependent on donations of both food and monetary donations from the generous partners of Shepherd of the Sea and the community. Donations can be placed directly in the Blessing Box or can be dropped off at the church office Monday – Thursday from 8 am to 12 pm.

Mobile Meals

Mobile Meals of the South Strand was started in 1983 by a group of churches in the South Strand.  All three groups merged in 1989.  Meals are prepared by St. Stephen Kitchen, SC and delivered by volunteers. The purpose of Mobile Meals is to provide meal service to the ill, elderly, disabled, shut-in, and other persons in the Grand Strand area east of the Intracoastal Waterway in Horry County who are handicapped in their ability to obtain adequate nutrition for themselves.  These nutritious home-delivered meals are packaged in insulated containers to keep them warm until delivered between 10:00 am and around noon time Monday through Friday, including holidays with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas for the South Strand when an extra meal will be provided the day before. While financial status is not a factor in determining eligibility for the meal, it does determine how much an applicant would pay for the meal.  Funding for this ministry is provided by the churches and meal payments from clients who have the ability to pay as well as funds from civic groups, Chapin Foundation, Ocean View Memorial Foundation, United Way and FEMA.  Mobile Meals of the Grand Stand is a United Way partner.
